Reese Witherspoon Struck By Car While Jogging | TMZ.com

I’ve never been hit by a car while jogging, partially because I have the reflexes of a cat and partially because I desperately try to avoid exercise. Unfortunately, Reese Witherspoon can claim neither my lightning first step nor my laziness. The Academy Award winning actress was out for a run earlier today when she was struck by a passing vehicle. As a precautionary measure, she was taken to a local hospital, but without any serious injuries, she was released shortly afterwards.

News of the car on person collision spread rapidly on the internet, prompting Witherspoon’s publicist to release a statement clarifying that the actress was okay. According to Reuters, the incident took place in Santa Monica, but beyond that, details are still very fuzzy.

Let me go ahead and fill in the specifics using common sense. Seeing as how she attained no injuries, it’s likely Witherspoon was running across the street when a motorist waiting at a stop sign either went without looking or decided to be a douche and prove a point. Either way, his or her vehicle made contact going less than five miles an hour, knocking Reese to the ground. She got up, decided not to be a hero and went to the hospital to verify her organs weren’t secretly bleeding.

During Wednesday night's Republican presidential debate, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman suggested it's time the country bring the remaining United States troops stationed in Afghanistan home.

"I think we've lost our confidence as a country," he explained. "I think we have had our innocence shattered. I think, ten years later, we look at the situation and we say, we have 100,000 troops in Afghanistan. This is not about nation-building in Afghanistan. This is about nation-building at home."

The GOP presidential contender continued, "Our core is broken. We are weak. We have got to strengthen ourselves. I say we've got to bring those troops home."

The remarks from Huntsman came in response to a question on whether he believes the country is safer today as a result of the nation's counter-terrorism efforts in a post-9/11 era. Looking ahead to the ten year anniversary of the tragic day he said, "I think one way to commemorate our ten-year anniversary of 9/11, remembering the 3,000-plus people who died in New York and in Pennsylvania and in Washington, is to say it's time for this country to set a goal for ourselves: We're going to get our core fixed. We're going to do some nation-building right here at home."

There is a tendency in the sports world to expect the injuries that superstar athletes suffer to match the spectacle and drama of the contests themselves – we are awed by NASCAR crashes, we marvel at the expressionless face that Muhammed Ali is left with after the pounding he took at the end of his career and we still immortalize Joe Thiesman’s legendary broken leg.

But there is no spectacle in seeing our heroes bump their heads, and then stay nauseated for months or years. It pulls them down way too close to our level, and then we suddenly find it hard to hate Sidney Crosby as much as used to, because he seems too human now.

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- Quick to tangle, Republican presidential rivals Rick Perry and Mitt Romney sparred vigorously over job creation and Social Security Wednesday night in a feisty campaign debate that marked a contentious new turn in the race to pick a 2012 challenger to President Barack Obama.

Far more than in earlier GOP debates this summer, the candidates mixed it up in their first faceoff since Perry entered the race and almost instantly overtook Romney as front-runner in opinion polls. Those two - as well as other contenders on stage - sniped at one another, contradicted allegations and interrupted media questioners to demand opportunities to take each other on.

"Michael Dukakis created jobs three times faster than you did, Mitt," Perry jabbed in the debate's opening moments, referring to one of Romney's Democratic predecessors as governor of Massachusetts.

"As a matter of fact, George Bush and his predecessors created jobs at a faster rate than you did," Romney shot back at Perry, the 10-year incumbent Texas governor.

The debate was the first of three in as many weeks, at a time when the economy is struggling, unemployment is seemingly stuck at 9.1 percent and Obama's popularity is sinking in the polls - all events that could make the GOP nomination worth more than it appeared only a few months ago.
