SINGAPORE - As preliminary findings have indicated human failure to be behind SMRT's latest security lapse, the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Transport has called for more security audits on the train operator.
A train carriage was found to have been vandalised with graffiti after a security breach at SMRT's Bishan train depot on Wednesday morning. The breach at the perimeter of Bishan train depot is believed to have happened near Sungei Kallang, a canal which runs between Bishan St 13 and the train depot.
Workers were seen repairing holes in the fence yesterday afternoon. The incident on Wednesday is the second such incident in two years, and one which comes after SMRT was instructed to improve its security.
While it has been implementing enhanced security measures since late last year - including installing security cameras and stepping up security patrols - SMRT said the latest incident occurred at a location where upgrading works to security measures were "being scheduled".
Member of Parliament Michael Palmer, who chairs the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Home Affairs and Law, felt the "second break-in means they (SMRT) are not trying hard enough" and that "we're lucky the consequence of the breach is only graffiti."
