The singer-turned-director took the flower with a forced smile and a strange sing-song "thank you", before turning to someone on her left and rolling her eyes as she stuffed the bouquet under the table.
And that's where it would have finished. But little did she know the microphones at the press conference were already live.
As she turned to someone on her right, she was picked up saying: "I absolutely loathe hydrangeas. He obviously doesn't know that."
The footage quickly found its way to YouTube, where it has already generated more than 800,000 views.
The diva-esque comment only added to the cold reception for her film W.E., about a woman who becomes obsessed with the story of King Edward VIII and his American lover Wallis Simpson, which screened at the festival.
