Tropical storm Lee turned an already busy week for NASCAR teams and officials into a nightmare Sunday, hammering Atlanta Motor Speedway with rain and postponing the AdvoCare 500 to Tuesday.
That in itself is unusual. Rarely has NASCAR skipped a day when announcing the postponement of a race because of weather. But Monday’s forecast in the Atlanta area called for almost certain rain and high winds, leading officials to reschedule the race for Tuesday because of possible safety issues.
Tuesday’s forecast is better but not wonderful. There is the possibility of morning showers.
The weather difficulties come at a very busy time for NASCAR and its teams. Results of the Atlanta race and Saturday night’s scheduled race at Richmond International Raceway will determine the 12 drivers who will compete for the Sprint Cup championship in the Chase.
Sprint Cup team haulers are scheduled to check into RIR Thursday night. Sprint Cup practice at the track is scheduled to begin at 12:10 p.m. ET Friday, with qualifying set for 5:35 p.m. ET.
