From knighted professors to community heroes, those who have shown excellence, leadership and made an outstanding contribution to Maori arts, have been honoured in Wellington’s Town Hall on Saturday.

The annual Creative New Zealand Te Waka Toi Awards are the only national Maori arts awards to celebrate all art forms. Established in 1986, they recognise achievement in areas including writing, composition, oratory, performing, object and visual arts. Two scholarships are also awarded to emerging artists.

“Whether they’re international icons, or treasured heroes of small communities, every one of the recipients has made an important investment in the future of Maori arts”, said Darrin Haimona, Chair of Te Waka Toi, the Maori arts board of Creative New Zealand.

“Our people champion a range of art forms. As we strengthen our local roots and stretch our wings internationally, we must also celebrate the achievements and commitment of those who’ve already done so much for the kaupapa” said Mr Haimona.

The conclusion of Anna Hazare’s fast after a compromise is not a victory for anyone. It’s a crossroads. In fact, there are two crossroads here. First, whether we will pursue political agenda by restoring and strengthening faith in constitutional methods or by taking recourse to street protests. Second, whether we will proceed along the path of economic freedom, openness and reform, or retreat into a new form of socialism that has so utterly failed us.

 Parliamentarians behave the way they do not because they are idiots but because of incentives. The anti-defection law has made them automatons controlled by the party leadership. When they can’t debate substantive issues they choose to raise their volume or engage in disruptive behaviour.

 Anna Hazare and his colleagues managed to galvanise the disappointment, outrage and exasperation that has built over the last 8 years. The fundamental cause of this is the stalling of the economic reform process. Political parties failed to understand and capitalise on Middle India’s growing but silent dissatisfaction with the state of affairs. We must not conflate Middle India’s sentiment with an endorsement of Lok Pal or indeed of Anna Hazare and his colleagues. The latter are at best trustees and custodians of public sentiment—they must not see this as license to pursue their own ideological and political agenda.

Officials advised swimmers to be cautious in the water and to listen to advice from lifeguards. They said that if you become caught in a rip current, the best thing to do is to remain calm and begin to swim parallel to the shore. Once you are away from the force of the rip current you can begin to swim back to the beach. Do not attempt to swim directly against the rip current.

As of 2 p.m. Tuesday Katia was a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and was moving northwest at around 9 mph. It is expected to weaken by Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The National Hurricane Center has the core of Katia tracked to move over the western Atlantic between Bermuda and the East Coast.

A flash flood watch is also in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday for Long Island, New York City and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. The NWS stated that a stalled front and tropical moisture will cause periods of rain with embedded pockets of heavy rainfall. Rainfall rates of approximately one inch per hour could produce both urban flooding and flooding of rivers and streams.
